WHAT IS DATA CENTER COMMISSIONING?
Data center commissioning is the structured verification and startup process used to confirm that installed mechanical, electrical and controls equipment is ready to perform as intended before the facility transitions into production operation.
Commissioning is most effective when it is treated as a lifecycle rather than a final event. Planning begins during design so the project team understands what equipment will be installed, how systems will be verified and what will be required to move them safely into operation.
COMMISSIONING LIFECYCLE
Commissioning terminology can vary by owner and provider, but the progression follows the same fundamental path: verify equipment before installation, confirm installation readiness, then safely start and transition systems into operation.

L1 EQUIPMENT RECEIVING
Front-end equipment receiving inspections are becoming increasingly important as accelerated supplier demand and compressed manufacturing schedules increase the risk of deficiencies reaching the jobsite.
On a recent project, a roughly 300-ton chiller arrived with piping connections that had not been fully brazed, illustrating why receiving inspection can protect downstream installation and startup.

THE COMMISSIONING BOTTLENECK
Commissioning is highly visible because it is one of the final activities before a building becomes functional. A commissioning delay, however, is not always caused by the commissioning team itself. The real constraint may sit upstream in electrical, mechanical, controls, access or construction completion.
A schedule status of “finished” does not guarantee the system is physically ready for commissioning.
