The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is looking for a Special Projects O&M Technician located in Rockford, Illinois.

The technician will support advanced inspections, specialized project execution, preventive maintenance and core system diagnostics across commercial and industrial solar PV assets.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or green card holders and should have two to four years of electrical-system experience, including direct solar O&M, installation or commissioning experience.

Position Overview

This role combines solar field service, advanced electrical testing, DAS diagnostics, special-project coordination, subcontractor oversight, project documentation and technician mentorship.

Special Projects O&M Technician Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong field-safety culture across special project activities.
  • Perform approved hazardous electrical energy control procedures and select task-appropriate PPE.
  • Participate actively in Pre-Job Briefs and Job Safety Analyses and use personal LOTO or serve as work leader when approved.
  • Identify, mitigate and report hazardous field conditions promptly.
  • Assist with planning and execution of special projects according to established procedures.
  • Perform detailed visual, mechanical and electrical inspections and advanced preventive maintenance on commercial and industrial PV systems.
  • Conduct infrared thermography, insulation resistance testing and I/V curve tracing.
  • Perform field observations and inspections and provide technical direction when required.
  • Support and oversee subcontractors and junior technicians to help maintain quality, performance and safety standards.
  • Use Data Acquisition Systems to identify performance issues and support detailed system diagnostics.
  • Diagnose electrical and operational issues independently in 600Vac and 1500Vdc environments.
  • Support the Director of Special Projects with schedules, milestones, deliverables and technically accurate client proposals.
  • Provide project-budget input, monitor expenditures and communicate potential project risks and mitigation options.
  • Record faults, deficiencies and nonconformances identified during field work.
  • Maintain accurate inspection, maintenance and repair records using the company's CMMS platform.
  • Accurately document labor time, materials and travel expenses.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging solar technologies, safety updates and industry best practices.
  • Share technical knowledge and field guidance with junior technicians.
  • Help improve company training materials for technical quality, clarity and safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical degree or electrical certification is highly preferred.
  • Two to four years of electrical-system experience, including solar O&M, installation or commissioning.
  • Working understanding of electrical systems, grid-connected solar, power generation and photovoltaic technologies.
  • Experience using specialized PV and electrical diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read PV as-built drawings, electrical schematics and single-line diagrams.
  • OSHA 10-Hour certification is required.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Certifications

Required

OSHA 10-Hour

OSHA 10-Hour certification is required. OSHA 30-Hour is preferred.

Preferred

NFPA 70E

NFPA 70E electrical-safety certification is preferred.

Plus

FAA Part 107

Drone certification and aerial thermography experience are considered a plus.

Plus

NABCEP

PV Installer or PV Commissioning & Maintenance Specialist certification is a plus.
