The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is looking for a Controls Engineer for a position located in Wausau, Wisconsin.

The Controls Engineer will support the development and implementation of PLC-based control and protection systems used within industrial and electrical generation facilities.

The role combines automation programming, HMI development, electrical design, testing, field installation support and commissioning.

Local candidates are preferred. This is an on-site position and sponsorship is not available.

Position Overview

This role blends PLC and HMI programming, electrical controls design, instrumentation, FAT and SAT execution, field troubleshooting, commissioning and multidisciplinary engineering coordination.

Controls Engineer Responsibilities

  • Program and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems.
  • Develop and troubleshoot HMI and operator interfaces.
  • Support commissioning of electrical, automation and hydraulic systems.
  • Develop electrical schematics and control-system drawings.
  • Prepare external wiring and internal panel documentation.
  • Develop field instrumentation and PLC drawings.
  • Support project testing, startup and field implementation.
  • Interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Perform electrical calculations for system sizing and component selection.
  • Participate in field inspections and project kick-off activities.
  • Perform engineering peer reviews.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing.
  • Support installation supervision at customer or project sites.
  • Support Site Acceptance Testing and final commissioning.
  • Prepare O&M, FAT, SAT, installation and training documentation.
  • Provide customer training for installed control systems.
  • Use electrical and hydraulic testing equipment during project execution.
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, HMI and controls disciplines.
  • Work with designers to develop project drawings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Alternatively, a technical degree plus three years of related professional experience.
  • Previous PLC programming experience.
  • Previous HMI programming experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or EPLAN.
  • Familiarity with electrical generation equipment.
  • Familiarity with turbine governors or excitation systems is valuable.
  • Strong technical conceptualization skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to explain complex technical issues to project teams and decision-makers.
  • U.S. or Canadian Professional Engineer registration, or ability to become registered.
  • Ability to travel more than 30% domestically and internationally.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
  • Must be available to work on-site in Wausau, Wisconsin.
