The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is searching for a Senior Transmission Engineer for a position located in Houston or Austin, Texas.

The Senior Transmission Engineer will lead the design of complex transmission line projects from conceptual development through design completion.

The position combines detailed transmission engineering, conductor studies, grounding and lightning analysis, electrical clearance calculations, equipment specifications, construction support and multidisciplinary engineering coordination.

The engineer will also provide technical leadership to the transmission practice, mentor less experienced engineers, support client relationships and participate in proposal, budgeting and business development activities.

Position Overview

This senior role combines transmission line design, EFM studies, conductor sizing, grounding and lightning analysis, NESC clearances, regulatory standards, QA/QC, construction administration, project leadership and client support.

Senior Transmission Engineer Responsibilities

  • Lead transmission design from conceptual development through final design completion.
  • Perform and lead EFM-related transmission analysis.
  • Lead conductor sizing and selection activities.
  • Perform induction, impedance, loss and voltage-drop analysis.
  • Prepare packaged transmission equipment specifications and data sheets.
  • Prepare requests for qualifications.
  • Develop technical bid summaries and purchase recommendations.
  • Lead economic conductor selection studies.
  • Perform lightning-performance studies and calculations.
  • Perform grounding calculations and studies.
  • Calculate required electrical clearances.
  • Apply NESC and other applicable codes to transmission design.
  • Interpret and apply NERC requirements.
  • Interpret and apply FERC requirements.
  • Apply applicable regional transmission standards and requirements.
  • Review transmission equipment vendor drawings.
  • Coordinate technical data with suppliers and clients.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, designers and detailers.
  • Participate in development of project schedules.
  • Support project scope, budget and staffing planning.
  • Participate in construction planning.
  • Manage engineering-related change orders.
  • Develop non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
  • Perform quality reviews of production drawings.
  • Verify drawing corrections across CAD platforms.
  • Review construction administration activities.
  • Coordinate with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues.
  • Lead field inspections, measurements and calculations.
  • Support testing of transmission systems.
  • Prepare and present technical reports.
  • Build relationships with clients, customers and contractors.
  • Support new business opportunities.
  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts.
  • Identify strategic project pursuits.
  • Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements.
  • Prepare project budgets and cost estimates.
  • Report project performance.
  • Provide technical leadership to the transmission engineering practice.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  • Maintain QA/QC process compliance.
  • Maintain compliance with company and site safety policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least seven years of transmission engineering experience with the bachelor's degree path.
  • Alternatively, bachelor's degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Engineering Technology candidates must have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
  • Engineering Technology path requires seven years of transmission engineering experience.
  • Alternatively, master's degree in Engineering plus six years of transmission engineering experience.
  • Expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of transmission design codes.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Experience with MicroStation.
  • Knowledge of BIM and Revit.
  • Experience with Civil 3D.
  • Experience with PLS and PLS-CADD.
  • Experience with RISA-3D.
  • Experience with MathCADD or related engineering analysis software.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Experience leading discipline design on large projects.
  • Ability to delegate engineering work to team members.
  • Ability to lead work execution and resolve technical issues.
  • Strong quantitative problem-solving ability.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to perform quality reviews of detailed engineering documents.
  • Ability to review technical specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
  • Sponsorship is not available.
  • Local candidates preferred or candidates should be open to relocation.
  • This is not a remote position.
