The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is searching for a Senior Automation & Controls Engineer for a position located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Senior Automation & Controls Engineer will lead engineering design activities for minor through major EPC projects across food, consumer products, pharmaceutical, life science, aerospace and industrial facilities.

The role owns the Automation & Controls scope and leads engineers, specialists and designers through software, hardware, instrumentation, electrical design, procurement, FAT, commissioning and startup activities.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or green card holders. Sponsorship is not available. Local candidates are preferred or candidates should be open to relocation. This is not a remote position.

Position Overview

This senior engineering role combines PLC and HMI development, instrumentation, SCADA, MES, control panel design, low-voltage electrical systems, vendor management, FAT, commissioning, EPC execution and technical team leadership.

Senior Automation & Controls Engineer Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with company and project-site safety policies.
  • Own the full Automation & Controls engineering scope for assigned projects.
  • Lead Automation & Controls Engineers, Specialists and Designers.
  • Coordinate with project management, electrical engineering, estimating, procurement and construction teams.
  • Lead development of PLC programming deliverables.
  • Lead development of HMI programming deliverables.
  • Support Batch and MES system design.
  • Support server and virtualization architecture.
  • Lead commissioning and startup of controls systems.
  • Develop instrument and device lists.
  • Develop I/O lists.
  • Prepare controls narratives.
  • Develop control panel and hardware designs.
  • Prepare device-location plans and installation details.
  • Lead control panel specification and procurement.
  • Coordinate equipment vendor design activities.
  • Track vendor progress.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Testing activities.
  • Prepare electrical design deliverables for 480VAC and below systems.
  • Support motor power system design.
  • Prepare installation plan drawings.
  • Develop conductor schedules.
  • Define process-instrument measurement requirements.
  • Support temperature, pressure, flow and level instrumentation.
  • Support analyzers and control valve applications.
  • Select appropriate controls technologies.
  • Review P&IDs with process engineers.
  • Define controls scope within process designs.
  • Verify engineering calculations and studies.
  • Coordinate controls deliverables with offsite design offices.
  • Lead quality reviews of project design submittals.
  • Apply automation and controls engineering codes and practices.
  • Coordinate with construction personnel during contract development and execution.
  • Develop project-phase engineering estimates.
  • Use tools including IAB, SIL Solver, Bluebeam, Excel and Visio.
  • Support project budgets and progress tracking.
  • Work directly with clients and vendors.
  • Develop strong client, customer and contractor relationships.
  • Support customer-satisfaction goals and expectations.
  • Provide technical direction to controls team members.
  • Support resource allocation across active projects.
  • Resolve field installation issues with project teams.
  • Support inspections, testing and calculations in the field.
  • Lead onsite controls startup and commissioning.
  • Develop discipline change notices when required.
  • Execute projects using the EPC delivery approach.
  • Support business-development project pursuits.
  • Participate in client events.
  • Support future project strategy.
  • Prepare engineering-hour estimates and proposals.
  • Support interviewing and hiring activities.
  • Coordinate department workload with controls leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Controls, Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Related ABET-accredited engineering degrees may qualify.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required for the primary qualification path.
  • Seven years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Alternatively, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering plus six years of experience.
  • EPC project experience is preferred.
  • Automation & Controls project experience preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of standard engineering methods and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of ANSI standards.
  • Strong knowledge of IEEE standards.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading discipline design on large projects.
  • Experience delegating work to engineering team members.
  • Ability to lead work execution.
  • Ability to resolve engineering issues in a team environment.
