The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is searching for an Automation & Controls Engineer for a position located in Kansas City or St. Louis, Missouri, or Atlanta, Georgia.

The Automation & Controls Engineer will execute engineering design activities for minor to major-scale Engineering, Procurement and Construction projects.

The position works with Automation & Controls Engineers, Specialists and Designers while coordinating with project management, electrical, estimating, procurement and construction teams.

Responsibilities extend from software and controls design through vendor coordination, Factory Acceptance Testing, construction support, field testing, commissioning and startup.

Position Overview

This role combines PLC and HMI programming, instrumentation, control-panel design, SCADA and safety systems, 480VAC-and-below electrical design, vendor coordination, FAT, field support, commissioning and EPC delivery.

Automation & Controls Engineer Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with company and project-site safety policies.
  • Work with Automation & Controls Engineers, Specialists and Designers.
  • Coordinate with project management and other engineering disciplines.
  • Coordinate with electrical engineering teams.
  • Coordinate with estimating, procurement and construction.
  • Develop PLC programming design deliverables.
  • Develop HMI programming design deliverables.
  • Support Batch and MES design.
  • Support server and virtualization requirements.
  • Commission software design deliverables.
  • Support system startup.
  • Prepare instrument and device lists.
  • Develop I/O lists.
  • Prepare controls narratives.
  • Develop control-panel designs.
  • Develop controls hardware design.
  • Prepare device-location plan drawings.
  • Develop installation details.
  • Develop 480VAC-and-below electrical design deliverables.
  • Support equipment and motor-power design.
  • Develop electrical installation plans.
  • Prepare conductor schedules.
  • Develop specifications for control-panel vendors.
  • Develop design requirements for equipment vendors.
  • Track vendor progression.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Testing activities.
  • Apply process instrumentation measurement protocols.
  • Support temperature instrumentation.
  • Support pressure and flow instrumentation.
  • Support level instrumentation.
  • Support analyzer applications.
  • Support control-valve applications.
  • Select appropriate controls technologies.
  • Review P&IDs.
  • Coordinate with process engineers to define controls scope.
  • Verify engineering design calculations.
  • Support project studies.
  • Develop design-basis documentation.
  • Prepare technical reports.
  • Coordinate deliverables with off-site design offices.
  • Perform quality reviews of design submittals.
  • Apply automation and controls engineering standards.
  • Coordinate directly with construction personnel.
  • Support development of construction contracts.
  • Track automation design effort against budget.
  • Track engineering progress.
  • Work directly with clients.
  • Work directly with vendors.
  • Build lasting client relationships.
  • Guide less experienced team members.
  • Coordinate with field personnel to resolve installation issues.
  • Support field inspections.
  • Support controls system testing.
  • Execute technical startup activities.
  • Execute commissioning activities.
  • Develop discipline change notices.
  • Apply basic EPC project execution methodology.
  • Travel to job sites for surveys.
  • Support field installations and startups.
  • Support automation project sales strategies.
  • Develop client relationships.
  • Assist with automation standards development.
  • Participate in interviews for early-career team members.
  • Assist with engineering-hour estimates and proposals.
  • Coordinate workload with the Automation & Controls Department Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Controls Engineering.
  • Electrical Engineering may qualify.
  • Mechanical Engineering may qualify.
  • Chemical Engineering may qualify.
  • Related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program may qualify.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
  • Three or more years of electrical engineering experience.
  • EPC project experience preferred.
  • Automation & Controls project experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design.
  • Familiarity with ANSI standards.
  • Familiarity with IEEE standards.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to support discipline design on large projects.
  • Ability to lead execution of assigned work.
  • Ability to resolve issues in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
